Donor Journey & Membership Funnel Analysis

This report shows how fictional HopeTrack campaign traffic moves from acquisition to first gift, repeat giving, and monthly membership. The purpose is not to showcase a decorative dashboard, but to show the decision logic a communications or fundraising team would use to improve conversion quality.

What the quarter says at a glance

The objective of this view is to separate volume from donor quality. Traffic alone does not answer whether a channel is moving people into sustainable support.

Total sessions
43,400
All campaign sessions included in the simplified donor journey model.
First donations
1,993
Overall session-to-first-donation conversion rate: 4.6%.
Repeat donors in 90 days
563
Repeat rate from first-time donors: 28.2%.
Monthly members
297
Membership activation rate from first-time donors: 14.9%.

Funnel performance by stage

The main leak is not at the donation completion step. It starts earlier, between donation page arrival and donation start, which suggests message-to-form continuity needs work.

Sessions

43,400
Acquired users across paid, owned, organic, and partner channels.

Donation page visits

15,840
36.5% of sessions

Donation starts

6,894
56.5% drop from donation page visits

First donations

1,993
28.9% of donation starts

Repeat donors

563
28.2% of first-time donors

Monthly members

297
14.9% of first-time donors

Channel quality matters more than channel volume

This table is intentionally simple: it helps non-technical stakeholders compare efficiency, not just traffic contribution.

Channel / audience Sessions First donations First gift CVR 90-day repeat rate Membership rate New donor revenue
Paid Social / Prospecting 18,240 486 2.7% 18.9% 7.8% $21,384
Paid Social / Retargeting 6,240 438 7.0% 26.9% 14.2% $21,024
Email / Existing supporters 4,980 514 10.3% 36.2% 24.1% $28,784
Organic Search / High intent 7,320 205 2.8% 27.3% 8.8% $9,225
Direct / Brand traffic 3,680 224 6.1% 32.1% 15.2% $11,760
Referral / Partners 2,940 126 4.3% 31.0% 16.7% $6,552

Interpretation: owned audiences and warmer traffic segments create the strongest downstream donor quality. Prospecting remains useful for scale, but not as the main driver of monthly membership.

Three insights the team can act on immediately

The value of this report is in what it tells the team to do next, not in how many metrics it can display.

Insight 01

Email remains the most efficient path to valuable donors.

Email drives the best first-gift conversion, the strongest repeat giving rate, and the highest membership activation rate. This suggests existing-supporter segments are the strongest base for sustainable revenue, not just short-term appeal response.

Insight 02

Retargeting outperforms prospecting once donor intent is established.

Paid social prospecting brings reach, but retargeting converts at a much higher rate and generates more membership-ready donors. This supports a tighter handoff between awareness campaigns and lower-funnel retargeting journeys.

Insight 03

The main friction point is before donation start, not after it.

More than half of users who reach the donation page do not begin the form. That points to message continuity, form framing, ask clarity, or page trust signals as the likely performance bottleneck.

Recommended actions for the next reporting cycle

These actions are intentionally specific enough to guide an actual campaign test plan.

Strengthen the bridge from campaign message to donation page.

Reduce drop-off by aligning headline, impact promise, and donation ask more tightly between ad or email creative and the donation landing experience.

Invest more deliberately in retargeting and supporter reactivation.

Shift part of upper-funnel spend toward retargeting cohorts and reactivation journeys that already show stronger first-gift and membership outcomes.

Design separate reporting for scale and donor quality.

Do not evaluate channels on sessions alone. Pair acquisition volume with repeat giving and membership rates so campaign decisions reflect long-term value.
